Kippenhok voor 6 Kippen: Welk Formaat Heb Je Nodig?
Zes kippen is een populaire keuze, al is het voor veel gezinnen eigenlijk al ruim. Zes legkippen leveren al snel 30 eieren per week — meer dan de meeste huishoudens op krijgen. Maar wie graag eieren weggeeft aan buren of familie, of rekening houdt met periodes van minder leg (winter, rui), zit met zes kippen goed. Maar welk hok past bij zes kippen? En hoeveel ruimte heb je nodig?
We krijgen deze vraag wekelijks in onze showroom in Ooigem. En het eerlijke antwoord is: het hangt af van je kippen, je tuin en je budget. Maar er zijn duidelijke richtlijnen. Die delen we hier.
De basisregels: zitstok, legnest en vloer
Kippen slapen op een zitstok. Overdag gebruiken ze het hok eigenlijk alleen om eieren te leggen. Dat betekent dat de grootte van je hok vooral afhangt van twee dingen: zitstoklengte en aantal legnesten.

Welk ras heb je? Dat maakt uit
Niet elke kip is even groot. Een sierlijke Leghorn heeft minder plek nodig dan een forse Brahma. Hier een inschatting per type:

Heb je zes Brahma's? Dan heb je bijna 180 cm zitstok nodig. Met zes Leghorns red je het met 120 cm. Kies je hok daarop.
Hoeveel scharrelruimte hebben 6 kippen nodig?
Kippen brengen het grootste deel van de dag buiten door. Scharrelen, pikken, zandbaden, insecten zoeken — dat is hun natuurlijke gedrag. Het hok is vooral een slaapplaats en legplek.
De richtlijn is minimaal 3 tot 4 m² scharrelruimte per kip. Voor zes kippen betekent dat 18 tot 24 m². Dat is een stuk van ongeveer 4 bij 5 meter. En hoe meer ruimte, hoe liever de kippen je gaan zien — en wij eigenlijk ook.

Moet je een kippenhok met ren kopen voor 6 kippen?
Het korte antwoord: waarschijnlijk niet.
De rennen die standaard bij hokken zitten zijn bijna altijd te klein als enige scharrelruimte. Een typische hok-ren combinatie biedt 2-4 m² buitenruimte. Voor zes kippen heb je minimaal 18 m² nodig.
Wat wij in de praktijk het meest aanraden:
- Koop een los nachthok (zonder ren) — dat is goedkoper en je krijgt meer kwaliteit voor je geld
- Maak een eigen omheining van stevig gaas (Bekaert of vergelijkbaar) — minimaal 18 m²
- Overweeg een automatische kippendeur die 's avonds sluit als bescherming tegen vossen
Een kippenhok met ren is wél handig als je de ren gebruikt als beschutte plek bij slecht weer of als tijdelijke quarantaine. Maar niet als enige buitenruimte.
Onderhoud van een kippenhok voor 6 kippen
Met zes kippen is het onderhoud beheersbaar, maar je moet het wel doen:
- Dagelijks (2 minuten): Eieren rapen, water en voer controleren
- Wekelijks (15 minuten): Mestlade legen (als je hok er een heeft), strooisel verversen in legnesten
- Maandelijks (30 minuten): Hok grondig schoonmaken, controleren op bloedluis en andere parasieten
- Jaarlijks: Hok behandelen met beits of houtbescherming (bij houten hok)
Checklist: kippenhok voor 6 kippen
- Minimaal 120 cm zitstoklengte (180 cm voor grote rassen)
- Minimaal 2 legnesten
- Goede ventilatie (openingen bovenaan, niet op zitstok-hoogte)
- Mestlade of makkelijk te openen achterwand voor schoonmaken
- Stevig dak (kunststof of bitumen, of hout dat je zelf nog behandelt)
- 18-24 m² scharrelruimte buiten het hok
- Eventueel automatische deur tegen roofdieren
Veelgestelde vragen
Hoe groot moet een kippenhok zijn voor 6 kippen?
Het hok zelf hoeft niet enorm te zijn. Minimaal 80x60 cm vloeroppervlak, 120 cm zitstoklengte en 2 legnesten. Véél belangrijker is de scharrelruimte buiten het hok: minimaal 18-24 m².
Hoeveel legnesten heb ik nodig voor 6 kippen?
Minimaal 2. De vuistregel is 1 legnest per 3-4 kippen. In de praktijk hebben kippen een favoriet nest en gebruiken ze er maar 1-2, maar het is beter om voldoende te hebben.
Wat kost een kippenhok voor 6 kippen?
Tussen de €135 en €470, afhankelijk van het model en de features. Een degelijk bouwpakket met mestlade heb je al voor €199 (Cochin 2G). Hokken naar België en Nederland.
Heb ik een ren nodig bij mijn kippenhok?
Niet per se. Een los nachthok met een eigen omheining van 18+ m² is voor de meeste mensen beter én goedkoper. Een ren is wel handig als extra beschutting.
